Capernaum is located on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. Capernaum was the center of Jesus ministry. Jesus would have taught in the local synagogue. It was a fishing village and the home town of Peter, James, Andrew and John and the tax collector Matthew. It was in Capernaum that Jesus healed a man possessed by an evil spirit, Mark 1:23-27; Peter’s Mother-in-Law, Matthew 8:14-15 and many others who were oppressed by demons, spirits and all who were sick,Matthew 8:16-17. It is called “the Town of Jesus or “his own City” after Jesus withdrew from Nazareth. The Synagogue was built at the end of the 4th Century AD. It consisted of four units: the prayer hall, the eastern courtyard, the southern porch and a side room near the northwestern corner of the prayer hall.

Peter's House

This is where Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law. Matthew 8:14-15; Mark 1:29-31. Peter’s house was a simple dwelling. In the mid  4th Century a large church was built, with Peter’s house as the centerpiece.
