The Galilee

The Geography

The sea of Galilee is the largest freshwater lake found in Northern Israel. The lake receives most of its water from the Jordan River, which flows into it from the north. The Lake is approximately 13 miles long and 7.5 miles across at its widest point. Its depth is 157 feet and is 690 feet below sea level. The Lake is surrounded  by hills  and can go from a calm peaceful environment to violent storms in a matter of minutes.

The Countryside of Galilee – The Region of the Galilee is divided into the Upper Galilee in the north and the Lower Galilee to the south and the Sea of Galilee. The area of the Lower Galilee is less mountainous then Upper Galilee,  rich in fertile soil and excellent for agriculture. Israel is a leading exporter in citrus such as oranges, grapefruit, tangerines as well as avocados, bananas, apples, dates and several other types of fruit.

Worship on Sea of Galilee

Much of Jesus ministry took place in and around  the Galilee with His home base at Capernaum.

The Sea of Tiberias or Sea of Galilee: Matthew 4:18-19 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.  And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”; (Matthew 15:29; Mark 1:16-17)  John 6:1 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of  Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias; (John 21:6)

Matthew  14:22-36  Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.  And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind,he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
