The Jordan River

Jordan River

Jordan River

The Jordan River forms its beginning from three different rivers and a spring near Mount Hermon in the north. It runs 251 kms into the Dead Sea. It consists of three sections; the river sources in the North to Lake Huleh, from Lake Huleh to the Sea of Galilee, and finally from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. The Jordan serves as the eastern border of the state of Israel and the West Bank and the Western border of Jordan. From its beginning to where it ends at the dead sea, the Jordan drops in elevation of about 2,380 feet. The name Jordan means “flowing downward” or “the descender”. The Jordan is an important source of water for agriculture in Israel. It has also been a source of conflict among Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinians.

The second site thought to be the site where John the Baptist would have baptized Jesus. It is located across from Jericho and is known as Qaser al-Yahud.
